DIY Chandelier Makeover



For a while now, we have been thinking of replacing the chandelier in our dining room. This chandelier came with our house when we bought it and has an antiqued finish that really didn't match with any of the other finishes. We had been looking for a new one and realized a few things. For starters, most of the ones we liked were very pricey. Secondly, the electrical in our dining room is not in the middle of the table, which means we would either need to hire an electrician to move the electrical outlet over or we had to stay with a chain style lighting fixture. Lastly, most of the fixtures we would agree on where very similar to the one we already had.


We looked for a new chandelier at Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, CB2, Ikea and even Lowes and all of the ones we liked looked similar to our but with one exception: all the chandeliers were black. 

That being said, we decided to attempt a DIY chandelier makeover. What's the worse that could happen? We didn't like it and would end up buying another one? We decided to use Rust-Oleum Black Hammered spray paint because we wanted a textured finish. It also comes in different colors or you can use a different finish or texture all together.

Materials needed:
1 can of spray paint
Cardboard or newspaper
Tools needed to remove light fixture

Step:1
Begin by clearing the area around the chandelier and turn off the power by turning of the circuit breaker. It is best to have two people to remove the chandelier.

Step 2:
Remove the bulbs from the chandelier and place in a secure place.

Step 3:
Open the plate of the chandelier that is mounted to the roof. Carefully disconnect the wires making sure you put the electrical caps back on.

Step 4:
Now that the chandelier is not wired to the roof, remove and take outdoors.

Step 5:
Make sure to lay cardboard of newspaper over your work surface.

Step 6:
Remove the candle tubes. These are the circular tubes under the bulbs.





Step 7:
Now the fun begins! Begin to spray paint the chandelier. You want to give it light coats and make sure that you don't miss any spots.



Step 8:
Next spray paint the  candle tubes. Be careful with these because they are very light and can tip over very easily while drying.


Step 9:
Next you need to spray paint the ceiling plate.


Step 10:
When the chandelier has dried, tilt it on it's side and make sure the bottom is completely spray painted.


Step 11:
Reassemble the chandelier by putting back the candle tubes and rewire to the roof. Lastly put the bulbs back on and step back and enjoy your new chandelier.

Homemade Herbed Potato Salad



When you think of a perfect summer bar-be-que spread, potato salad is always on the menu! There are so many different ways to make a delicious potato salad, but our recipe incorporates fresh herbs that makes it memorable. Our herbed potato salad has so many great flavors from the herbs and seasonings that we are sure you will love it! Best of all, we lightened up the recipe by using a mixture of greek yogurt and mayo! Our guests always serve themselves seconds every time we make it. We hardly ever have leftovers! Enjoy!

Ingredients:
4-5 lbs of gold potatoes
4 eggs
1 cup of mayonnaise 
1 cup of plain non-fat greek yogurt
2 tablespoons of whole grain mustard
3 tablespoons of dijon mustard
1/2 of a red onion finely chopped
2 tablespoons of dill
2 tablespoons of parsley
2 tablespoons of chives
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
Juice of half a lemon
2 tablespoons of champagne vinegar

Kitchen Essentials:
Stove
Large pot
Strainer
2 large bowls
Whisk
Knife
Measuring cups
Measuring spoons
Fork

Directions:
Add the potatoes to a large pot and place the eggs on top. Fill the pot with cold water and place on the stove over medium-high heat. You want to start with cold water so everything cooks evenly. After 15 minutes of boiling, remove the eggs from the water and let cool. Check the potatoes with a fork to see how they are going. You want the potatoes to be form tender. This can take anywhere from 20 to 25 minutes depending on how large they are. Once the potatoes are tender, strain the potatoes and allow to cool for 10 minutes so that they are easy to handle.

Meanwhile, begin to make the dressing for the potato salad. Add the mayo, greek yogurt, whole grain mustard, dijon mustard, finely chopped red onion, dill, parsley, chives, salt, pepper, juice of half a lemon and the champagne vinegar to a large mixing bowl. Whisk until all the ingredients are evenly distributed. Set aside.

Grab the hard boiled eggs and remove the shells. Chop the eggs and place into a bowl. Next, grab your potatoes and also chop them into 1/4 inch cubes and also add them to a bowl. Once all the potatoes are chopped, pour the dressing over the potatoes and gently mix well to ensure that everything is evenly incorporated. 

Place the potato salad in the refrigerator and cool until you are ready to serve! 

Serves: 8 to 10 people.

French Kiss Martini



Happy Friday! We are trilled to collaborate with Kait on her summer drink series as guest bloggers. Yesterday, we posted one of her cocktail recipes "Sex on the Rockies" on our blog Mr. & Mrs. P. It is her hometown twist on the classic beach drink "Sex on the Beach." Our followers loved it! 

For our guest post on her blog, we decided to keep with the travel themed cocktails and create our twist on the classic French Martini. We took it up a notch and created the French Kiss Martini. This is the ultimate date-night-in drink for a Friday night and reminds us of our recent trip to Paris. (See our Paris posts on our blog!) With just a few simple ingredients, you can make it too! The pineapple juice and raspberry liquor delivers a wonderful rush of sweetness while the vodka and triple sec loosen you up! We promise you and your date won't be disappointed. Oh la la!

Ingredients:
1 cup of vodka
1/2 cup of pineapple juice
1/4 cup of triple sec
1/4 cup of Chambord (raspberry liquor)
Lemon
Sugar
Ice

Kitchen Essentials:
Martini Glasses
Martini Shaker
Small plate
Knife

Prep:
Begin by pouring about 1/2 a cup of sugar to a small plate. Grab you lemon and cut it into 4 pieces lengthwise. Run the lemon wedge around the rim of the martini glasses and dip into the sugar. The lemon really helps the sugar adhere to the glass. Set aside while you prepare the martini.

Directions:
Add the vodka, pineapple juice, triple sec and Chambord to the martini shaker. Fill with ice and shake vigorously for 30 to 45 seconds. Pour the chilled cocktail into your sugar rimmed martini glasses and enjoy!

Recipe makes 2 martinis.

A Twist on Sex on the Beach: Sex on the Rockies (Guest Post from Chickadee Says)

Although we have been blogging for more than three years now, we had never posted a guest post on our site! Well, it’s about time we did, so we joined forces with Kait from Chickadee Says on our first guest blog post. If you haven't visited her blog, and you are a food-loving dog person, you are missing out on some delicions recipes and amusing photos of her dog "Tink." Kait is a health-consious blogger in her 20s from Denver who inspires her followers to eat well with her Meatless Monday recipes and vegan dishes, while sneaking in some festive cocktail ideas as well! Speaking of cocktails, she worked her magic and created a drink that represents both her blog and ours. Great job, Kait! We can't wait to try it this weekend!



When the darlings here on Mr. & Mrs. P invited me to guest post, I knew I wanted to fashion a recipe that paid homage to both of our hometowns. This proved to be quite a challenge as Denver and Miami are about as different as they come in terms of both landscape and taste profiles, but I loved the end result.



I decided to put a spin on one of the most stereotypical ‘beach drinks,’ the Sex on the Beach cocktail, and add a bit of Rocky Mountain flair. Sex on the Rockies shakes things up by swapping out the traditional peach schnapps for a Rocky Mountain Blackberry Liqueur, and the cranberry juice for mango nectar, creating an interesting combination of hearty and tropical fruit resulting in a drink that is both  beach-light and mountain-stout.




Ingredients:
- 1 ½ Ounces Vodka (I used Silver Tree Vodka brewed in Denver, CO)
- 1 Ounce Blackberry Liqueur (I used Leopold Bros Rocky Mountain Blackberry Liqueur)
- 2 Ounces Orange Juice
- 2 Ounces Mango Nectar

Instructions: 

1. Add vodka, blackberry liqueur, orange juice, and mango nectar to a cocktail shaker. 


2. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously until all ingredients are mixed well and chilled.
3. Pour the mixture into a cocktail glass filled with ice.


4. Garnish with slices of mango and orange.


5. Enjoy!

Peach and Raspberry Pie






Anytime is a good time for pie! This recipe is perfect for summer because of the fresh peaches and raspberries, but it is also comforting in the fall because of the warm cinnamon and ginger. Basically, you cannot go wrong when you make this pie! We like to eat it straight out of the oven when it is piping hot with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Whenever we make it around here, our neighbors come knocking at our door for a piece. Everyone loves it and you will too!


Ingredients for pie crust:
1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 stick of cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch cubes
3 tbsp. ice cold water


Ingredients for pie filling:
5 peaches
1 pint of raspberries
2/3 cup of brown sugar
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons corn starch
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon of butter
1 tablespoon of milk

Kitchen Essentials:

Stand mixer with paddle attachment (or food processor with dough blade)
Measuring cups and spoons
Plastic wrap
Refrigerator 

Clean work surface
Rolling pin
10 inch pie pan
Fork
Cup
Oven
Cookie sheet
Pizza cutter
Large bowl
Knife
Brush

Prep:

Cut the cold stick of butter lengthwise in half. Then cut the halves lengthwise again. You should have 4 long pieces. Next cut each piece into eight small squares. Return the cut butter to the fridge. Next, fill a cup with ice and water. Keep to the side, so that the water gets really cold. This is the water you will add to make the dough later.

Directions for pie crust:

Stir together the flour, sugar and salt in the mixer bowl. Add the cut-up butter and toss with a fork to coat with the flour mixture. Mix on medium-low speed until the texture resembles coarse cornmeal. At this point, add the 3 tbsp. of cold water and mix on low speed just until the dough pulls together.


Pat the flour into a ball and flatten into a disk. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 


While the dough is in the refrigerator, grab a large bowl. Begin to cut peaches into half inch wedges and place in the bowl. Add the brown sugar, sugar, corn starch, cinnamon, ginger, lemon juice and vanilla extract to the bowl. Give it a good mix to make sure all the ingredients are evenly mixed. Lastly add the raspberries to the bowl and mix it one last time. Be gentle the raspberries are delicate! 

Preheat the oven 375 degrees and dust a clean work surface and a rolling pin with flour. Take the pie dough out of the refrigerator, unwrap and place on the work space. Dust the top of the dough with flour. Begin to flatten out the dough with the rolling pin and continue to roll out into a large circle. If it sticks to anything, add more flour.



Place the pie dough into the pie pan and trim the excess. Make sure to leave the edge a little long as the dough will shrink while cooking. Poke the bottom of the pie crust a few times with a fork and add your peach and raspberry filling.



Roll out the excess dough again and using a pizza cutter, cut 12 half inch strips. Lay 6 strips vertically onto of the pie and begin to weave the other 6 strips going horizontally. 



Brush the top of the pie crust with milk, to get a golden crust. Lastly cut one tablespoon on butter into tiny pieces and sprinkle over the top of the pie.

Place the pie pan on top of a cookie sheet, just incase any juices spill out while baking. Place into the oven and bake for 60 minutes. 

Soon you will smell the irresistible aroma of this pie and you will be able to enjoy!

Shell Crazy Summer Decor


Nothing says summer like sea shells! So when the first day of summer comes knocking at our door, I begin to start collecting shells where ever I find them. We recently went to Sanibel, Florida on a day trip and bought a bunch of shells and starfish at a store called She Sells Sea Shells. I've been going to this store since I used to vacation there as a little girl with my family. Here is a glimpse of some of the ways I used the shells we bought to decorate our home. Hopefully this inspires you to decorate your own home.

Decor in the dining room.

We put blue river rocks from Target in a glass bowl and filled with more sea shells, a starfish and a sand dollar. The key is to space out the shells so they don't overlap.

We put curly willow in a blue vase.

We tied a blue starfish around a blue vase with twine.

 Sand is a great foundation to shell arrangements. Just don't go overboard and keep it clean.

We bought this metal "Relax" sign at JoAnn's Fabrics.

A quiet corner in our living room.

 Placing an orchid indoors adds a nice tropical touch and the blooms last a long time and only need to be watered once a week.
We added a white starfish to tie in the theme from the dining room.

Our table centerpiece consists of a silver platter filled with sand, three large snail shells and small green shells.

We put air plants in large snail shells because they don't need soil or water. They are the world's easiest plants!
